FORENSIC VAULT SERVICE
Our new “Forensic Vault” service was designed to help companies, law firms, and government agencies to have copies of desktop and notebook computers made, following strict forensic and chain-of-custody procedures. Our clients use our "Forensic Vault” Service as a precautionary measure when employees leave their employment. Theft of Intellectual Property (customer lists, pricing, future business plans, or pending patents and inventions) by departing employees is very costly for most companies. Unfortunately, most companies do not adequately safeguard potential evidence should they need to file a lawsuit against a departed employee or her new employer. LSI’s “Forensic Vault” service copies the data from the departing employees’ computers in a forensically sound manner. The data is then locked in our evidence locker, and the computers in question can then be re-formatted and re-deployed by your I.T. staff, with LSI maintaining the data and the appropriate chain of custody of the copy. Subsequent forensic analysis can be performed to determine if files were copied from the departed employee's computer.

WE UNDERSTAND
LSI understands that electronic data is not going away. If anything, E-Discovery is becoming more important to the average attorney. We combine the most advanced forensic tools, hardware, and software with our knowledge of the litigation process to help our clients to develop an efficient cost effective case strategy.

LSI Holds the following certifications:

  • Certified Criminalist
  • CCE (Certified Computer Examiner)
  • ACE (Access Data Certified Examiner)
  • SCT (Summation Certified Trainer)
  • CCSA (Concordance Certified Software Administrator)
  • CPE (Certified ProDiscover Examiner)

VENDOR SELECTION:
The whole process begins with vendor selection. Before engaging a company to perform computer forensics you may want to determine if the Electronic Discovery/Forensics vendor is certified. To see if your vendor is a Certified Computer Examiner, click here.

Texas Law regarding Computer Forensics: (Texas Occupations Code Sec 1702.104) In Texas, if a company engages in the business of securing, or accepts employment to secure, evidence for use before a court, that company is required to have a Private Investigator’s License. (This includes computer evidence.) Private Investigations companies are overseen by the Texas Department of Public Safety. In fact, it is a crime to engage a non-licensed person to secure evidence. (See the Texas Occupations Code: Sec 1702.368) To see if a company holds a Private Investigations License, click here.

Section 1702.104, Occupations Code has been amended, to provide that for purposes of Occupations Code Section 1702.104, Subsection (a)(1), obtaining or furnishing information includes information obtained or furnished through the review and analysis of, and the investigation into the content of, computer-based data not available to the public.

DATA COLLECTION
Forensically sound data acquisition is paramount to your case. Improper collection of electronic evidence may be illegal if performed by a non-licensed person in Texas, or may result in spoliation of the evidence if the correct procedures are not followed AND documented. By hashing the data before it is captured, and comparing that “digital fingerprint” against the forensic clone of the data, it is possible to tell if even one bit of data has been altered.

EVIDENCE PROCESSING / DATA CULLING
Different cases require different tools. We understand that if your case involves thousands of email files and their attachments, culling the data may require the use of key-word searches, or restricting the search to certain periods of time. If your case involves data that may have been deleted from a hard drive, data recovery techniques may need to be employed. We output the data to your specifications whether you’re using Summation, Concordance or a proprietary database format. For a listing of our supported formats, click here. For firms that want to share the data with co-counsel or clients our Internet Document Repositories are an excellent choice.

DOCUMENT PRODUCTION
Some attorneys produce paper documents, some produce TIFF images or PDF files, and others produce data in its Native Format. Whatever your production preference, LSI will provide Electronic Bates Numbers and convert your data to any format you desire.
