storage devices used by your company/agency in the course of business.
a. What backroom hardware?
(Mainframes, mini computers, e-mail servers, file servers, fax servers,
voice-mail servers?)
b. What operating systems?
(Windows NT/2000/XP, Linux, Novell, Unix, proprietary?) If Microsoft-based,
what service packs are installed? If Linux, what is the distribution (Red
Hat, Debian, Mandrake, etc.), what version of the Kernel is running, and what
windowing system is in use (Gnome, KDE)?
c. What workstation hardware?
Brand (Dell, Gateway, generic IBM clone, etc.), operating system (Win
95/98/ME/XP, other), average size of desktop hard drives.
d. Are notebooks used? Brand
(Dell, Gateway, generic IBM clone, etc.), operating system (Win 95/98/ME/XP,
other?), average size of desktop hard drives.
e. Are PDAs used? Brand (Palm,
Pocket PC devices, etc.).
f. What's the backup apparatus?
Hardware, tape formats (DAT, DLT, QIC), tape capacities, backup software
(brand, version, configuration).
g. What optical storage devices
are used? Brand, type (CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-RAM, ZIP, JAZ, FireWire), recording
softare/version/configuration.
h. What electronic storage devices
are used? Non-volatile RAM, smart cards.
i. Can
users fax from their PCs? If yes, what program do they use?
j. What Office Machines are
used? Copiers, fax machines, voice-mail systems (brands, models, serial
numbers) NOTE: most of these devices contain hard drives.
